Yes I highly recommend this route too! I use it regularly to get to and from work in the city, so while I don't go as far as Greenwich I LOVE the Regents Canal and the marshlands. I can also recommend going further north then Tottenham Hale if you have the time. The NCN1 diverts away from the river for a little while - which a lot of people don't realise about and carry on along the river path which at the moment is not very well maintained.

For those of us who don't live in London there is an excellent Youth Hostel in Lee Valley Park at Cheshunt

My wife and I cycled this path on the 31st of December 2009, and it was an absolute gem. It takes 2hrs one way when you take it slow as we did. Starting out at Tottenham Hale, the ride feels like you're anywhere else but London - with no car in sight for 75% of the trip. It's a superb adventure.

The paths by the canals are well maintained indeed, with plenty of interesting bits to discover. We loved the absence of steep hills too.

Currently some building work on the Isle of Dogs means more driving on the road, which will be replaced by a longer ride by the Thames promenade in the future. We'll certainly do this one again!

Things to watch out for:

Although the Greenwich Foot Tunnel is currently open 24/7, the lifts are not - so be prepared to carry your bike a few flights up and down after 5pm in the winter. Also, no cycling is allowed in the tunnel, tempting as it may be.

Shortly after leaving Lea Valley Spingfield, there's a railway bridge that's only 5ft tall - ridiculous how they could have built it that low. It's not illuminated, even though lights have been fitted (about 3ft above the ground). Mind your head!
